Reigning U.S Open champion Kim Clijsters , started her campaign in the Luxembourg Open with a comfortable win over Meghann Shaughnessy of America 6-2 6-2 to advance into the second round of the tournament.
"I feel pretty good with my win today," said Clijsters "It took some time to adjust to the court but I'm most happy with my forehand today. It allowed me to be aggressive and had Meghann under pressure. My first serve percentage probably could have been higher but overall I'm very pleased."
However later in the evening, the tournament recieved its biggest upset when top seeded Caroline Wozniacki withdrew due to injury while trailing 5-7 0-5 against localite Anne Kremer.
"I felt good going into the match, but the injury suddenly happened," said Wozniacki. "Sometimes injuries are unpredictable. I was looking forward to playing here and doing better than I did last year, and I'm sad this happened today and I had to retire."
Anne Kremer was a late replacement for American teenager Melanie Oudin, who also withdrew hours before her first match because of illness.
Other winners of the day were were Roberta Vinci, Shahar Peer, Alize Cornet, Patty Schnyder, Timea Bacsinszky, Katarina Srebotnik, Kirsten Flipkens and Polona Hercog.
