The stage is set and now it’s about maintaining the momentum – in the women’s first quarterfinal match of the day on Tuesday, former world no. 1 Kim Clijsters will be playing against the Russian world no. 21 Vera Zvonareva. Clijsters have a 5-0 winning record against the Russian. Last time they met in Hasselt in 2006 on a hard court, where the Belgian defeated the Russian in three well-fought sets with a 6-4 3-6 6-4 scoreline.
Clijsters proved her prominence in her last match on Monday by defeating her compatriot and great rival Justine Henin in three sets with a 2-6 6-2 6-3 scoreline. Everybody expected a great fight, but the way Clijsters rallied past Henin in that match was truly remarkable. With this kind of form and mental toughness, it seems that Clijsters will easily win her quarterfinal match against the Russian.
On the other hand, Zvonareva has a probing serve and furious forehand drives in her arsenal. The Russian has come this far in the Championships 2010 by beating Svetlana Kuznetsova and Dinara Safina. Clijsters certainly has an edge, but Zvonareva would not let it slip easily.
