In a third round clash at the Mutua Madrid Masters, Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro takes on Croatian Marin Cilic.
Placed at No.11 in the ATP rankings, Del Potro has not been able to live up to his billing since winning his maiden Grand Slam at the US Open in 2009. The 23-year old Argentine has 10 career titles to his name and has managed to win two titles this year as well - one in Marseille and the other at the Estoril Open. At the Aussie Open in January, he fell to Roger Federer in the quarters. His win-loss record stands at 27-6, which characterizes his form this year. He would be looking to add a first Masters trophy to his trophy collection in Madrid.
Marin Cilic missed the initial part of the season and returned to the tennis circuit only in late February this year. At Delray Beach and then at Indian Wells, he returned without winning a single match. At the Miami Masters ,Cilic made a positive start by beating Igor Kunitsyn in straight sets but then he lost to Del Potro in straight sets himself. His best result this year came in the recently concluded BMW Open where a resilient Cilic finished runners up to Philipp Kohlschreiber. His win-loss record stands at 6-6, and he will be looking to improve on that this tournament.
Del Potro leads their head-to-head count by 5 matches to 2. Del Potro also holds a victory over the Croatian here in Madrid back in 2010.
TennisEarth predicts this one to go to Del Potro in two sets.
