Jo-Wilfried Tsonga out of Cincinnati Masters
World No.10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who defeated four top-10 players in a row including three of the four members of the Big-4 in Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Roger Federer to capture the Toronto Masters crown last week suffered a shock 6-1, 6-4 loss at the hands of the Russian Mikhail Youzhny in the second round of the Western & Southern Open here in Cincinnati on Tuesday.

Former World No.5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who was simply outstanding during his magical run in Ontario the previous week as he annihilated the top seed Novak Djokovic, outlasted British No.1 Andy Murray, trumped rising Bulgarian star Grigor Dimitrov, and overpowered 17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer in back-to-back matches to clinch his second Masters-1000 crown failed to bring his spectacular form to Ohio as he was beaten 6-1, 6-4 by the former top-tenner Mikhail Youzhny in an hour and eight minutes on Tuesday afternoon.

As Tsonga managed to win only 50% points behind his first serve, could not serve a single ace, hit only 3 winners, and committed as many as 14 unforced errors, he never appeared to be in the game. On the other hand, Youzhny kept on plugging away as he was able to hold on to his service games with little difficulty. He served at 68% and won 73% points on his first serve and made just the 6 unforced errors to pocket the opening set in merely 24 minutes.

Match Cast: Youzhny vs. Tsonga!

The second set saw a similar pattern being followed by Youzhny as he continued to move Tsonga around on court, from one side to the other to force him into uncharacteristic errors. Besides, Tsonga’s struggles with his serves continued as well as he dropped his serve twice to go 5-2 down. And, even though Jo-Wily got one of those breaks back, he failed to stop Youzhny from serving out the match on the second time of asking in the 10th game.
