Jerzy Janowicz vs Somdev Devvarman: Wimbledon Round 1 Preview
Last year's semi-finalist Jerzy Janowicz is set to renew his rivalry with India's Somdev Devvarman today as he squares off with the diminutive 29 year-old for the second time in his career on Court 17 today.

When Poland’s Jerzy Janowicz reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon last year, it seemed as if the tall right-hander, who was only 22 years of age at the time, was headed to greater things in life and seemed like a Wimbledon champion in the making whose combination of serve and drop shots was mesmerizing to say the very least.

It was that deadly one-two play that helped him lead eventual champion Andy Murray in the semi-finals last year, but due to an injury and some sensational play from the Scot, Janowicz failed to finish the job.

12 months on, a lot has changed. The once rising star has seen a lot of criticism come his way as his slightly overwhelming personality took centre-stage. Janowicz has criticized the sport’s top players, including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, over the last year and called them arrogant.

At the same time, he has also criticized his country for not providing him with a platform to flourish and has vowed to not represent Poland in the Davis Cup again. All this combined with his poor play on court (he has lost 14 of his 24 matches this year) has seen him drop down the pecking order to 25th in the rankings.

The way things stand, he will only drop further in the rankings if he fails to make it to the semi-finals again. The 23 year-old needs to find that focus again if he wants to retain any of those 720 ATP points.

Opposite him stands hard working Indian Somdev Devvarman who is ranked at 125 in the world now. Devvarman has a win over Juan Martin del Potro this year and that may make him believe that he has a chance against Janowicz today.

Head to Head: This is the duo’s second meeting on the ATP tour with Janowicz winning the first in five sets. The World No.25 has, however, lost to Devvarman at the Challenger level in the past.
