Top seed and Indian Wells champion Jelena Jankovic returned to top form with the commencement of the season's second hardcourt tourney as she breezed past her opening round opponent Bojana Jovanovski, winning 6-3, 6-3 at the 2010 Banka Koper Slovenia Open, a WTA International event being played at the picturesque Portoroz in Slovenia.
"Bojana played superbly, she is young and very talented," Jankovic said. "I played as best as I could; I'm slowly getting back into shape after my injury."
Jankovic expressed her gratitude for the fan support she received in the Slovenian city - "The crowd was holding a banner saying 'God must love her, it's not hard to.''
"It really means a lot to me. I really appreciate all these fans. I play all over the world and whenever people cheer for me it gives me the energy to carry on."
Meanwhile, Wimbledon semifinalist and second seed Petra Kvitova suffered a shocking loss at the hands of German Stefanie Voegele, losing in straight sets with a 7-5, 6-2 scoreline.
Third seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Fourth seed and last year's runner up Sara Errani though ensured there were no further surprises in the day when they struggled past their respective opponents to move ahead in the draw. Where the Russian got the better of Alberta Brianti 7-5, 6-1, Errani battled past Georgian qualifier Anna Tatishvili 7-6(1), 6-4 to take a step towards extending her win-loss record in Portoroz.
"I have a lot of ranking points to defend and that's not easy," said Errani "Mentally, I struggle when I come on court knowing I'm defending so many points. But I'm trying to focus."
Other winners of the day included home favourite Polona Hercog, Ksenia Pervak, Katarina Srebotnik, Maria Elena Camerin, Anastasiya Yakimova, Alexandra Panova and Johanna Larsson, who took out No.8 Sofia Arvidsson in straight sets to advance to the next round of the event.
