John Isner was the first big casualty from the Apia International men’s draw after losing to fellow American Bobby Reynolds. Reynolds prevailed over Isner in an exciting three set encounter after coming back from a set down to beat him 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 and thus reach the quarter-final.
Reynolds next faces Finnish south paw Jarkko Nieminen who beat Czech eighth seed Radek Stepanek in another very close and tough three set match 7-6, 5-7, 6-1. After losing the first set, Stepanek came back to win the second 7-5, but it was one way traffic for Nieminen in the final set as he wrapped it 6-1 to reach the last eight.
On the other hand, top seed Juan Martin Del Potro had an easy outing against Polish Lukasz Kubot when the Argentine steamrolled over his opponent 6-4, 6-2. The first set was relatively a close encounter and once Del Potro pocketed the first set, the second set was more comfortable than the first one.
Del Potro next faces Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis who beat Australian, Matthew Ebden 3-6, 7-5, 7-6. Baghdatis struggled in the first set, but managed scraping through the second and the third set. Baghdatis overcame this hurdle primarily because of his experience as compared to the inexperience of Ebden.
