Isner, Stepanek headline opening day winners in Memphis

Both Radek Stepanek and John Isner made it to the next round of the event, but with absolutely contrasting wins as the Czech was tested to limits in his opener.

Third seeded Czech star Radek Stepanek survived an opening round scare when he registered a hard-fought 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win over South African qualifier Kevin Anderson to reach the second round of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, being played here in Memphis, USA.

Stepanek, who had a brilliant opening to the 2009 season with two titles, made a bad start this year and lost in the opening rounds of the previous two tournaments. The Czech was later joined by German Philipp Petzschner who took out local favourite Taylor Dent 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the second round.

In the day's only other main draw singles match, American John Isner took out compatriot and wild card Ryan Harrison 6-1, 7-5 in just 62 minutes of play.
