United States Davis Cup team will play its first round in Serbia next month, featuring fresh faces John Isner and Sam Querrey. In doubles, twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan will start the campaign for USA. Since 2000, this is first time that Andy Roddick or James Blake are not included in the team. Isner is making his Davis Cup debut, while Querrey has once played for the U.S. team.
While defending his decision on the inclusion of new players, McEnroe quoted "Certainly the door is never shut on those guys for coming back at some point, and I think Andy already expressed that he may not be playing this time, but it doesn't mean he is never going to play Davis Cup again, But at the same time these two guys have earned their spots and I'm very excited to see how they perform in what will be a very tough environment."
Querrey did not fare well in his last two Davis Cup appearances for USA, as he lost both of his matches against Spain in 2008. On the other hand, Isner reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and also earned his first ATP World Tour title in Auckland, New Zealand, last month.
