Roger Federer was the World No.1 and entered the tournament as the man to beat. Rafael Nadal was World No.2 and in brilliant form ahead of the French Open and experts predicted a classic final between the world's best players. It was a classic alright, however, it was contested between Federer and old foe David Nalbandian.
Nalbandian came into the tournament being unseeded and hence had to over come Rafael Nadal and the Novak Djokovic in successive rounds at the quarterfinal and semifinal stage respectively. Against Rafa, Nalbandian was unbelievable and handed out a tennis lesson as he beat the Spaniard in two sets 6-1,6-2. Then in the semis Nalbandian beat Djokovic in a tight match lasting two sets again, the Argentine won 6-4,7-6.
The final was contested between Federer and Nalbandian. Nalbandian achieved the impossible to upstage Federer in 3 sets with 1-6,6-3,6-3 scoreline. He had now beaten the World No.2 followed by the World No.3 and now the World No.1 in successive rounds of the event.
