The top seed at Landsky Lighting Guangzhou International Women's Open, Jarmila Groth eased past buding player, Nina Bratchikova in two straight sets 6-2, 6-0. She took just 53 minutes to advance to the second round of the tournament.
A concerned Groth said, "The conditions are difficult. The heat doesn't bother me so much but it's the humidity that's the worst part. I'm not used to toweling down after every single point. I played a solid match. I'm happy with my performance. I served well and took care of all the points I had to. It was a nice win."
Groth had put in decent performances being a seed back in 2006 at Portoroz as she reached the Quarterfinals of the tournament.
Groth happily mentioned, "It's the first time I've been seeded No.1. I hope to live up to the expectations and hopefully people will enjoy watching me as the No.1 seed."
Fourth-seeded Ayumi Morita had an easy match against qualifier Junri Namigata at a scoreline of 6-2, 6-2. Chan Yung-Jan, the number two seed in the tournament and number sixth seed Bojana Jovanovski exited from the tournament. Ksenia Pervak just nudged past Chan in three fluctuating sets, 3-6 6-0 6-2 and Alla Kudryavtseva defeated Jovanovski in two sets, 6-1 7-5.
Sania Mirza was among the other unseeded players who advanced in the tournament. She dismantled Katie O'Brien in three sets 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
A confident Mirza in search for a win since June this year said, "I was injured for five months at the beginning of the year, so it's not easy. At the US Open, it was the first time I was playing qualifying in a Grand Slam, so it was a new experience for me, but I was really happy to win four matches in a row. I have never been to Guangzhou before, so to win my first match here was great. The hardest thing to do when you come back from injury is to get your confidence back and win back-to-back matches and I'm happy that I have been able to do that. Every win counts at this stage, and every win is great for my confidence."
Mirza will face third seeded Akgul Amanmuradova in the second round of the tournament. They will be playing each after a long period of eight years.
