Grand Slams: Three surfaces, three queens

After a very open 2011, where we had 4 different champions for the four Grand Slam events, the year 2012 started on a similar page as the we had three different winners in the first three Grand Slams. The party however was cut short as Serena Williams emerged as the undisputed queen once more.

While most would agree with that dissection, few would argue that the year belonged to Victoria Azarenka who not only reached two major finals but also claimed the Aussie Open. She's the World No.1 and the break through player this year.

Another player that made tremendous progress this year, and on her least favorite surface was Maria Sharapova, the Russian claimed her first Roland Garros title and with it her career Grand Slam.

Lets recap this year's Major's as we move closer to the season ending championship.

Yeah, I'd rather she was winning tournaments than be the darling of the press.

Maria has had media training though, you can tell - you don't get the representation that she has without it. As far as I'm aware, Vika is yet to sign one of these massive deals and it probably is because she's focused on her tennis.

Sharapova is certainly better with the media these days.

She could do with a PR person to help elevate her status a little? She could be good for women's tennis if she just learned to deal with the media as they said at the US Open.

I admire the fact that it's all about the tennis. She is so intense on court. She does have a totally different off court persona.

If she had a better attitude/stylist I think she would have, and could be the "darling" of women's tennis, but that's just not her style.

If she'd lost that final, it could've been a different story. She hasn't really gotten enough credit this year. At the end of the day it's Serena that's thwarted her having an exceptional year!

She had to seal the number 1 with a grandslam, or else suffer that same old fate.
