The final of the 2010 German Open, being held in Hamburg, Germany, will be contested between two of the most in-form players in the ATP circuit. While Austrian Jurgen Melzer has come through some impressive runs including a semifinal finish at Roland Garros, Golubev has made a mark with wins over some much higher ranked opponents in the draw here.
Melzer is everyone's favourite going into the final. After impressive showing in Roland Garros and Wimbledon, the Austrian star is all set to claim the first title of the year. In his semifinal match against Italian Andreas Seppi, he looked in total control of his game. His groundstrokes have never been better, infact with an improved serve, he is able to finish the points with much positive results. All in all, the is Melzer's best chance at securing the season's first of many titles that are in the offing hopefully.
Melzer's opponent in the final is the feisty Kazakh, Andrey Golubev. Originally from Russia, Golubev changed his nationality before entering Davis Cup competition and soon found himself in top 100 in the Singles rankings. He finished runner up in St. Petersburg two years ago and failed to enter another final due to inconsistent performances. Currently ranked 82 in the world, Golubev took out tournament's top seed Nikolay Davydenko in the pre-quarterfinals and looked equally impressive against Denis Istomin and home favourite Florian Mayer in the subsequent rounds. If there is one match in his entire career so far that he would like to put his best in, it's the final today.
Overall, today's match has a potential to bring the best out of both players as each one of them is vying for title mirth. Melzer, however, has an upper hand and the experience for grand stages which gives him an edge over the Kazakh star.
TennisEarth.com predicts Jurgen Melzer's triumph in the final in straight sets.
