Garcia-Lopez opened the match on a good note and broke Devvarman's serve in the fourth game to lead the first set 4-1. An immediate break back though gave a momentary lease of life to the Indian star who eventually lost control in the tenth game and with it gave away the set 4-6.

The second set turned out to be a lop-sided affair when Garcia-Lopez reeled off a series of games to complete the 6-4, 6-1 match in one hour and 27 minutes of play.

In more action from Thursday, Americans James Blake and Mardy Fish play lower ranked opponents alongside Japan's Kei Nishikori, who is up against Igor Andreev of Russia.
