Gael Monfils upsets Roger Federer, reaches Shanghai Quarters
Former Top-10 Gael Monfils took out Roger Federer in a pulsating three set match to book a place in the Quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters. The Frenchman displayed some tremendous shot making skills to outplay the Swiss for a second time in his career.

Problems continued for Roger Federer in 2013 as he was ousted in the Third Round of the Shanghai Masters by Gael Monfils in three sets. The Frenchman defeated Federer 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3 in 2 hours and 8 minutes to reach the Quarterfinals of this ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Event. Federer was clearly not at his best but no taking any credit away from Monfils, who played some outstanding tennis to win this clash.

In just under half an hour, Monfils took the first set after playing some really aggressive tennis. With 11 winners along with 5 well placed aces, Monfils served very well and won a high 84% points when his serve fell in. He started the set perfectly by breaking the Federer and then kept holding his serve to take the first set. Federer on the other hand was looking a bit sloppy and paid the price by giving the first set away to the Frenchman.

Federer then staged a remarkable comeback in the Second Set as he came back from a break down to further extend the match into a third set. It was a much more controlled set from the Swiss as he served well and kept himself calm throughout to get rewarded. With 20 winners coming from the Federer corner, the Swiss kept getting the balls in and kept Monfils on the move throughout to finish off points with ease. The Frenchman played well but failed to capitalize on the break he got as he let the Swiss come back and eventually lose it in the tie break.

The Third Set started well for both the players but it was the Fourth Game where Monfils made his move over a bit sloppy Federer. With big serves along with heavy forehands, Monfils kept exerting pressure on the Swiss with his retrieving skills to which Federer succumbed. He had a chance in the Seventh Game to break back and get the set back on serve but Monfils’ serve was too strong for him to break as Monfils went on to serve out the match in the Ninth Game after smacking a forehand winner.

ilyaskhan, after watching all his recent matches, it is highly unlikely that now he can do well in London though he is likely to qualify courtesy Murray. I've been his fan for over 10 years and now his game has gone down very badly and revival does not appear to be possible. I feel awful and sad!

You put it well, his game was sloppy. He lacked penetration, His placings in the volleys were nowhere and unforced errors were to many. Service was ordinary. Confidence in the game was totally missing.
