Gabashvili stuns Haas at Delray beach

Russian Teimuraz Gabashvili stunned top seed and past champion Tommy Haas 7-6(3) 7-5 on opening day at the Delray Beach International Tennis Championships.

Teimuraz Gabashvili of Russia posted the biggest upset of the day at Delray Beach International Tennis Championships as he knocked out top seeded and 2006 champion German Tommy Haas 7-6 (3) 7-5 in the first round on Monday.

This is the third time in row Haas has lost in the first round of this tournament.

“He came up with some big shots at the right time,” Haas said. “I had my chances, but for some reason I couldn’t win the points that maybe would’ve turned it around for me today.

“Maybe I was just a step slow to get to the ball to make something happen. These guys are hitting the ball so big these days you have to be there every single point.”

Fifth seed Evgeny Korolev of Kazakhstan recovered from a second set loss to beat Ecuador’s Nicolas Lapentti 6-2 1-6 6-1. 

In the remaining match of the day, Wayne Odesnik eassed past Rajeev Ram 6-3 6-2 in all American clash.
