At the age 23, Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai is France's biggest hope at this year's French Open. Despite winning several international level tournaments, it was Rezai's swashbuckling run in Madrid that fetched her instant fame. Her wins over some of the best players in the world including Justine Henin and Venus Williams proved that this 'New Kid in the Block' is here to stay.
The latest French sensation has been on an astonishing run since the end of last year. Her triumph over compatriot Marion Bartoli in the finals of the 2009 Commonwealth Bank of champions was the Frenchwoman's first major win which helped her reach new heights.
The Spring hardcourt season did not bring any signiicant success for Rezai, who struggled with bad form and suffered early exits in Indian Wells and Miami. However, just as the European claycourt season started, the Frenchwoman acquired the tenacity of a 'tigress on the hunt' and stunned all high profile names to clinch the biggest title of her career in Madrid.
Technically speaking, Rezai's biggest ally is her forehand which is razor sharp and destructive enough to get her a lot of easy points in rallies. The best of her shotmaking abilities came to the fore during the final of the Mutua Madrilena Madrid Open where she extracted errors off Williams backhand with the help of her blistering forehand down the line winners. Venus is known for her extensive court coverage, especially with the help of her backhand which is so good that even in a defensive position, she is able to create beautiful angles. However, Rezai's ferocity proved to much for the American veteran who lost the final in straight sets.
With an obvious and enormous interest from the media the world over, Rezai seems all set to be the next WTA star among the Williamses and the Belgians of the women's tennis.
