Kazakh Star Yaroslava Shvedova suffered a disheartening loss after giving surprising results at Roland Garros last week when she lost her second round match at th Aegon Classic tennis tournament, being played at the Edbeston Priory Club in Birmingham, England.
Shvedova lost her serve thrice in the match and bowed out of the event with a 4-6, 4-6 scoreline to compatriot and qualifier Sesil Karatantcheva. Shvedova was later joined by Eighth seed Andrea Petkovic, who lost her second round match with an identical scoreline to Russian Anna Chakvetadze.
Meanwhile, 10th seed and defending champion Magdalena Rybarikova survived mid match jitters to beat Ekaterina Makarova 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(5) in a marathon two hours and 30 minutes of struggle.
The other two seeds in action, No.5 Sara Errani and No.13 Angelique Kerber also registered contrasting wins to move to the next round.
The day also saw the completion of two first round matches featuring two British players in action. Where Anne Keothavong struggled past Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, Elena Baltacha was forced to withdraw from the match due to an injury while trailing by a set against Kaia Kanepi.
