French Open 2013: Serena Williams vs Roberta Vinci Match Preview
World No.1 Serena Williams has been in pristine form this year, and has up until this point in time dropped just the six games at French Open 2013. Today however, her task will be a lot more difficult as she prepares to do battle with one half of the doubles No.1 Roberta Vinci in her pre-quarter final match here on court Philippe Chatrier.

It’s hard to believe that World No.1 Serena Williams has only won one French Open trophy in her career. A big contender for the greatest of all time in the women’s game, Serena’s French Open record is a modest one. Of course, the year Serena won the only slam on clay she also went on to complete the ‘Serena Slam’ – the American held all four majors at once, which was something that she aimed for at the start of the year.

Alas, for it was not to be. The 31 year-old perished at the quarterfinal stage in Melbourne earlier in the year as Sloan ‘new Serena’ Stephens defeated her idol, by playing the match of her life at the Rod Laver Arena. Never one to give in, one of Serena’s underrated assets is her resilience on court. The American refocused and was back before one knew, and has now got five titles under her belt already, out which four she won after the debacle in Melbourne. The American has since won 2 WTA Premier Mandatory events in Miami and Madrid, following which she won a Premier 5 event in Rome.

The World No.1 once again has all the odds in her favour as she prepares for a 16th Grand Slam title, her only problem however is the fact that clay isn’t her most favored surface, and there are others in the WTA who prefer it more than Serena does. Arch rival and reigning champion Maria Sharapova is herself in stunning form at the moment.

Opposite her stands World No.1 in the double’s rankings and No.15 in the singles’ Roberta Vinci who has had two stunning years on the WTA circuit. She along with Sara Errani, is one of two players who have grown by leaps and bounds in the last couple of seasons. Vinci might be 30 years of age, but her zeal and hunger on court is still similar to an 18 year-old.

The Italian has a 27-13 win-loss record of this year.

Head to Head: Having played just the two times against each other, Vinci is yet to win a single set against Serena. Those two matches however were played on hard courts and grass courts and hence this match will have a new dimension to it.
