Fish opened the match on a bright note and wrapped it up with the help of a series of breaks at 6-0. The second set brought a shift in momentum when Hajek broke Fish early on to level the match at one set a piece.
Fish' game completely fell apart in the third set as a result of which he trailed the match by two sets to one. The fourth set brought a much needed revival of form for the American home favourite, who not only bagled his opponent but levelled the match at 2-2. The fifth set did not change the story much as after receiving an on-court treatment for right hamstring, Hajek barely managed to get on board and lost the match 0-6, 6-3, 6-4, 0-6, 1-6 in two hours and 36 minutes of magnificient tennis.
Fish hit a total of 52 winners and 24 aces throughout the match and took full advantage of Hajek's 50 unforced errors.
In one of the biggest upsets of the day, in-form Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis lost his opening round match to French veteran Arnaud Clement despite leading the match by two sets to one at one point. The five set match ended with a 6-3, 2-6, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 scoreline in Clement's favour.
Other notable winners of the day so far are Argentine Eduardo Schwank, Benoit Paire, Philipp Petzschner, Jeremy Chardy, Pablo Cuevas and Spaniards Tommy Robredo, Daniel Gimeno-Traver and Feliciano Lopez, who all registered contrasting victories over their respective opponents to move ahead.
