Fish made a bad start to the match and lost his serve in the very first game to give a momentary control to Cuevas, who took an opportunity to serve out the set at 5-4. However, a break back then witnessed Fish' return in the set after which he sealed the opening set by 7 games to 5.
The second set saw some of the best tennis from the American's racquet who reeled off seven games in a row for a strong two sets to love lead. It wasn't long when Fish had a break in the third set as well, with the help of which he completed the 7-5, 6-0, 6-2 win in exactly two hours of play.
In the only other completed match of the day so far, Spaniard Albert Montanes defeated Australian Carsten Ball 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 in one hour and 46 minutes of play.
