Juan Carlos Ferrero, the former world number one registered a victory in the first round at German Open Championships 2010 being held at Hamburg, Germany. Ferrero had a tough first set as he struggled initially against Czech Jan Hajek and lost his first service game. He then fought back to get the set back on serve and went on further to win the first set in a tie-breaker with a scoreline of 7-4. Ferrero then showed actual traits of his matchplay as he used his backhands to utter precision to race away with the second set 6-1. The 30 year old Spaniard reached the finals of Hamburg in 2001 and will expect to go a notch ahead this year and win the title
Ferrero performed well during the clay season this year as he won 14 straight matches at the ATP Masters Series held in Latin America. Ferrero seems to be in great form as he has come in to this tournament after a semi-final appearence at Stuttgart. Ferrero seems to have found great levels of matchplay at an age of 30 when most of the players on tour start thinking about retirement.
Nikolay Davydenko recorded and easy win at Hamburg as he showed signs of recovery from his wrist injury due to which he was forced to stay away from the professional tour for couple of months. The Defending Champion defeated Frenchman Florent Serra in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. The Russian served phenomenally well as he got 78 percent of his service points. Davydenko will be attempting to win the second title of the year and his 21st as a whole. Nikolay won his match in just 58 minutes and played blistering ground strokes form the back of the court for which he is famous for.
In other results, experienced Jarkko Nieminen defeated ninth seed Giles Simon from France in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 within two hours and fifteen minutes of play. Eleventh seed Tommy Robredo also exited form the tournament as he was defeated by Potito Starace. The Italian recorded his first win in his sixth meeting with the Spaniard in three sets 7-6, 5-7, 6-1. Florian Mayer outlasted Alexander Dolgopolov of Ukraine in three sets 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 in 1 hour and 50 minutes.
“It was an important match for me," said an surprised Mayer. "I’ve never played against him. I didn’t know what to expect. During the first set I couldn’t do anything against Dolgopolov. His play was very surprising."
