Spaniard Fernando Verdasco topped his compatriot and two-time champion Nicolas Almagro with a 6-4, 7-6(5) victory on Thursday and advanced into the semi-finals of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel, an ATP World Tour 500 Event.
Eighth seeded Fernando Verdasco, who is looking to reach his second Acapulco final, broke Almagro’s serve in the tenth game of the second-set and won the match. In the semi-final, Verdasco will play Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland. The Swiss advanced with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Frenchman Jeremy Chardy.
In another all-Spanish quarter-final encounter, two-time defending champion David Ferrer extended his Acapulco winning streak to 13 straight matches as he beat Pablo Andujar 6-2, 6-4 in one hour and 14 minutes. Ferrer will take on Colombian Santiago Giraldo in the semi-final tomorrow. Giraldo beat Argentine Carlos Berlocq in another quarterfinal match on Thursday with a 7-5 3-6 6-4 scoreline.
