“I had to save break points today, which I didn’t have to do in the first round, so I thought it was a bit tougher,” said Federer “But I was able to raise my game at a few crucial moments and that was the difference today.”
Federer will next face the winner of the match between Russian Evgeny Korolev and Jeremy Chardy of France, who prevailed against American James Blake 7-6 (4) 6-7 (6) 6-4.
Fourth-seeded Croatian wild card Marin Cilic defeated Philipp Petzschner of Germany 6-4 6-4 to set up next round clash with Viktor Troicki of Serbia.
Fifth-seeded Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic overcame a first set deficit to beat lucky loser Florent Serra of France 3-6 7-6(1) 7-6(1).
Other winners of the day were Swiss No 2 Stanislas Wawrinka who struggled past Ivan Ljubicic of Crotia 6-7(5) 6-3 6-4 and American John Isner who upset Chilean Fernando Gonzalez 7-6(3) 4-6 6-4.
