16 time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer today suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Spaniard Albert Montanes and bowed out of the 2010 Estoril Open, an ATP World Tour 250 event being played in Estoril, Portugal.
Federer looked off form from the very beginning of the match and despite showing some resistance in the second set, failed to live upto the expectations and lost the 2-6, 6-7(5) match in one hour and 21 minutes of play.
Montanes will now face local favourite Frederico Gil, who struggled past Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 to give home fans something to cheer about. Gil opened the match well but survived mid-match jitters, thereby letting the Spaniard come back into the match. However, things returned to normal for the Portuguese, who completed the three set win in two hours and 28 minutes of play.
