Federer opened the match on a bright note and broke Melzer's serve in the second game to build a strong lead. Once the first set was in hand, Federer looked for further opportunities of sabotage which he got in the second set twice and raced to a two sets to love lead.
The third set did not bring any shift in momentum as Federer cruised to a 6-3, 6-2, 6-3 win in just 84 minutes of play.
Federer will now meet the winner of the match between Czech Tomas Berdych and German Daniel Brands. Berdych has already scored a win over Federer earlier this year in Miami.
