Five-time US Open champion Roger Federer subdued one of his most formidable foes Robin Soderling in straight sets with a 6-4 6-4 7-5 scoreline and secured his berth in the semifinal of the US Open, being played here at Flushing Meadows.
Chasing his 17-Grand Slam title, Federer once again proved his prominence and simply outclassed the Swede, as he fired 18 Aces amidst whipping wind and also hit 36 winners as compared to Soderling’s 2 Aces and 16 winners. Federer also converted 5 of the 6 break points he had and did not allow the Swede to breathe a sigh of relief – throughout the match.
Re-visit the exciting moments of this match!
Federer brought up the match point by hitting 17th ace of the match and then went on to win it by hitting the 18th ace – well, that sums up the clear picture of the match, which was thoroughly dominated by the Swiss Ace. Federer once again looked sublime with his awe-inspiring backhands and mind boggling serves. With this win, Federer sets up his semifinal clash with the familiar foe – Novak Djovkovic of Serbia, who edged past the Frenchman Gael Monfils in three straight sets with a 7-6 (2) 6-6-2 scoreline.
Federer not only reached the semis of yet another US Open, but also thrashed all those odds, which were fuelling the thought that Soderling might spoil Federer's run at this year's US Open, as the Swede did it in French Open. It was a controlled and precision-oriented performance from Federer.
