Federer opened the match on a bad note and lost his serve in the very first game. However, the Swiss soon regained momentum and managed to hold his serve till the set went into a tie-break. The tie-break too, saw several ups and downs after which Federer pocketed it by 9 points to 7.
With the opening set in hand, things became quite clear for the World No.1 who then broke Clement's serve twice to complete the 7-6(7), 6-2 victory.
Earlier in the day, Spaniard Albert Montanes took out Pablo Cuevas 6-4, 6-3 to move ahead, whereas another Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez reeled off 8 games in a row before his opponent Alberto Martin decided to sit by the sidelines due to a nagging injury.
