Five-time US Open champion, Roger Federer looked far from his best, but in the end he managed to win his opening encounter of the 2011 US Open in straight sets against World No. 56 Santiago Giraldo of Colombia with a 6-4 6-3 6-2 scoreline and reached the second-round of this year’s last Grand Slam tournament, being played here at Flushing Meadows, New York.
Federer took 1 hour and 46 minutes to win this match. The Swiss also looked feeble at times, as he committed 35 unforced errors and also offered many freebies to Giraldo. Earlier in the day, World No.8 Mardy Fish overwhelmed German Tobias Kamke, as he posted a comprehensive 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 win in one hour and 43 minutes of play to secure his berth in the second round of the 2011 US Open Tennis Championships. In the second-round, Fish will take on Malek Jaziri of Tunisia, who rallied past Thiemo Debakker of Netherlands with a 4-6 6-1 6-4 6-2 scoreline.
On the other hand, Croatian Marin Cilic posted a convincing 6-2, 7-5, 7-6(6) win over American Ryan Harrison to advance to the second round. In the second-round, Cilic will take on Australian tennis sensation Bernard Tomic who eased past Michael Yani of USA with a 6-3 6-4 6-4 scoreline.
Other notable winners of the day were: Richard Gasquet, Tomas Berdych, Janko Tipsarevic, Juan Monaco, Philip Petzschner and Alexandr Dolgopolov, Mikhail Kukushkin, Michael Llodra, Ivo Karlovic, Kevin Anderson and Juan Carlos Ferrero. Well, Ferrero will meet World No. 7 Gael Monfils of France in the second-round of the tournament. Monfils edged past Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria with a 7-6 6-3 6-4 scoreline.
