Federer, Tomic reach second-round in US Open
Third-seeded Roger Federer earned a straight sets victory over World No. 56 Santiago Giraldo of Colombia with a 6-4 6-3 6-2 scoreline and reached the second-round of the 2011 US Open.

Five-time US Open champion, Roger Federer looked far from his best, but in the end he managed to win his opening encounter of the 2011 US Open in straight sets against World No. 56 Santiago Giraldo of Colombia with a 6-4 6-3 6-2 scoreline and reached the second-round of this year’s last Grand Slam tournament, being played here at Flushing Meadows, New York.

Federer took 1 hour and 46 minutes to win this match. The Swiss also looked feeble at times, as he committed 35 unforced errors and also offered many freebies to Giraldo. But, the Swiss made up for unforced errors with 36 winners, which proved crucial – in the end. The Swiss earned 72% points on his first serve and converted 7 out of 8 break points.

Re-live the excitement of this match!

After 36 minutes of play in the first set, Federer clinched it as he tackled mid-set crisis very well. The third-seed raced to a 5-1 lead before losing his concentration, but regrouped him nicely at the right time and won the first set. Federer committed 17 unforced errors, but made up for them with 12 massive winners in the first set.

The trend continued, as Federer took 40 minutes to win the second-set. The Swiss ace served really well, as he earned 70% points on his first serve, fired 11 winners and also smacked 4 aces. Federer converted 2 out of 5 break points to win the second-set. Both contenders committed 10 unforced errors, but Giraldo could only muster 8 winners - which made all the difference in deciding the outcome of the second-set.

Federer clinched the third-set in 30 minutes, as he raced to a 4-0 lead before Giraldo could hold on to his serve. Finally, Federer won the third set and match with a 6-4 6-3 6-2 scoreline.
