Tenth seed and Stanford champion Victoria Azarenka bowed out unceremoniously from the year's last major, the US Open, due to illess caused by extreme heat, thereby giving opponent Gisela Dulko a safe passage into the third round.
Click here to re-visit the moments of Azarenka's agony and struggle.
Azarenka started the match, clearly affected by the rising temperatures and soon lost her serve to give Dulko a formidable 4-0 lead. The Belarusian somehow regrouped to get on board for 1-4 but after losing another game, lost control over herself and fell on court. Luckily, the on-court trainer standing near the sidelines along with the officials ran for help and minutes later, took Azarenka off the court for further medical aid.
Dulko was leading 5-1 at the time when the chair Umpire declared her the winner of the match.
Meanwhile, former world number one Ana Ivanovic overwhelmed Chinese and Aussie Open semifinalist Jie Zheng 6-3, 6-0 to move to the third round of the event.
