In the first round of the Brisbane International, Belgian Justine Henin won her first match in her tennis comeback when she upset second seeded Russian Nadia Petrova 7-5, 7-5.
"I feel better today than when I retired, that's for sure," Henin said. "Better emotionally, mentally, better with myself and that makes a big difference that I will enjoy being on the tour again."
The former world number one proved she can still be a dominant force in the women's game as she showed steely determination to defeat Petrova. She now plays Sesil Karatantcheva of Kazakhstan in the second round.
In another match, local favourite Jelena Dokic lost out to third seed Serbain Ana Ivanovic 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. Unforced errors by Dokic helped Ivanovic close out the first set by 7 games to 5.
Dokic then regrouped herself and started hitting one winner after another to race to a 5-0 lead before being broken once again, only to recover and win the second set 6-1.
Roles were reversed in the third as Ivanovic broke Dokic three times to win the decider and match with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-3 scoreline.
Other winners of the day included Lucie Safarova, Aleksandra Wozniak, Agnes Szavay, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Roberta Vinci, Timea Bacsinszky and Sesil Karatantcheva, who all registered contrasting wins over their respective opponents to move ahead in the draw.
