Top seeded Novak Djokovic of Serbia walked into the second round of the ABN Amro World Tennis tournament, as Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine retired midway with a knee injury.

Djokovic was up by 6-2 4-1 at the time.

"You always wish for an easy first round match because it is a bit tricky as you have to get used to the surface, light and surroundings," said Djokovic.

He next faces Switzerland's Marco Chiudinelli, who battled past 2008 Rotterdam champion Michael Llodra of France 6-1 6-7 (5) 7-6 (6).

2007 champion Mikhail Youzhny struggled past Kazakh qualifier Andrey Golubev 1-6 7-6 (0) 7-6 (5) . Frenchman Julien Benneteau reached into the next round with a 6-3 6-3 victory over seventh-seeded Croatian Ivan Ljubicic, a finalist here in 2005 and 2007.

Also, qualifier Marsel Ilhan of Turkey defeated Spain's Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 6-1 6-4 and Dutch wild card Thiemo de Bakker ousted Czech lucky loser Jan Hajek 7-6 (5) 6-3.
