Third seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain has pocketed the first against 6-4 German Schuettler of Germany.

Nadal started the things in brilliant fashion and raced to 5-1 lead in the opening set of the match. But he went off the boil and the German narrowed the lead to 4-5 in the set. The Spaniard kept his cool and wrapped up the first set on second attempt.

Another Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero is leading 4-2 against Daniel Koellerer.
