What looked like a one-sided contest in the first set, evolved into a somewhat interesting duel in the second set – but finally, the petite Russian safely made it through the first-round, as he won the match 6-4 6-4. Gulbis committed a number of unforced errors and gifted away a break to Davydenko in the first set, which the Russian won with 6-4.
