World No. 6 David Ferrer continued his tremendous form on clay on Saturday, as he earned a comprehensive 6-1, 6-2 victory over his compatriot Fernando Verdasco to win 2012 Abierto Mexicano Telcel title. With this victory, defending champion Ferrer completed an Acapulco titles hat-trick.
Winner of this ATP World Tour 500 Tournament for the third straight year, Ferrer notched up his 15th successive win in Acapulco and improved his record to 4-6 on clay against Verdasco. Top-seeded Ferrer kept the proceedings under control from the start, as he mustered 88% points on his first serve and broke Verdasco twice in both sets to win this match in just 70 minutes. Now, Ferrer has an astounding 18-1 win-loss record for the year. His only defeat came in the Aussie Open quarterfinal earlier this year, where he lost to eventual champion Novak Djokovic.
David Ferrer is the second player in the history of this tournament to win three titles in a row. He joined Thomas Muster, who won four consecutive crowns from 1993-1996. The Spaniard improved his record to 14-14 in title matches. Ferrer has now claimed three titles in 2012, having successfully defended his title in Auckland, with an addition of Copa Claro ATP Tournament last weekend.
