Current U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters game home fans a lot to cheer about when she toppled 13 time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams in straight sets in an Exhibition event hosted in Brussels, Belgium.
Initially termed as the 'Best of Belgium', the match was expected to feature Belgian superstars Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters. However, a disappointing withdrawal by Henin, following a right elbow injury at the pre-quarterfinal match against Clijsters at Wimbledon, gave way to Serena Williams to replace Henin.
A record breaking crowd of 35,681 got together to witness Clijsters 6-3, 6-2 win over Serena Williams at the King Baudouin Stadium on Thursday. Czech-American tennis legend Martina Navratilova did the chair umpiring for the match. Williams, who is struggling with a foot injury herself, agreed to play the exhibition match, perhaps due to a strong motivation of playing in front of the record crowd.
Williams recently hit the headlines with her fourth Wimbledon Singles triumph which put her in the all-time Grand Slam titles winner list at No.6 behind Margaret Smith Court (24), Steffi Graf(22), Helen Wills Moody(19), Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert (18 each).
Interestingly, the last meeting between the two WTA giants also favoured Clijsters when Serena lost a controversial match at the U.S. Open last year.
