World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki takes on Italian star Alberta Brianti for a place in the semifinals of the 2011 E-Boks Sony Ericsson Open, a WTA International event being played here at Copenhagen, Denmark.
World No.1 Caroline Wozniacki has everything, No.1 ranking, countless titles, hefty endorsement deals and overwhelming media atttention. Unfortunately, in the absence of a GRAND SLAM, it all looks a little futile. The way Wozniacki's major dreams were shattered at Roland Garros a couple of weeks ago, it reminded fans and pundits of Swiss Miss Martina Hingis, who found herself lost in the power game of Williamses and Davenports from the beginning of the new millennium. Despite the game, Hingis failed to go all the way in majors and lost to one player or another at various stages. Wozniacki definitely has done a commendable job by holding on to the No.1 spot by winning several premier level titles, but the losses at majors are keeping her from joining the 'real elite' of women's tennis.
Wozniacki's opponent, Italian Alberta Brianti is currently ranked No.67 in the world and has had some impressive wins this season that helped her fetch her maiden WTA singles title in Fes. After scoring two three sets wins over lower ranked opponents, Brianti will have to put in her best to make an attempt to overcome the home favourite.
Both players have contested two matches before and Wozniacki has recorded wins in each one of them.
TennisEarth.com's Pick - Caroline Wozniacki in two sets.
