Caoline Wozniacki - the former US Open finalist is all set to battle Mona Barthel for a place in the next round at the Mutua Madrid Masters in Spain.
World No.6 Wozniacki has had an erratic year so far and would be looking to make amends in the on-going event. She started the year at the Sydney International where she lost in the quarterfinal to Agnieszka Radwanska. In the only Grand Slam this year - the Australian Open, she lost to Belgian veteran Kim Clijsters at the same stage. Her best result this year came in the recently concluded E-Boks Open where she finished second behind Angelique Kerber. She was defeated by Kerber one more time in the second round of the recently concluded Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in straight sets. Her win/loss record this year stands at 18/8.
Mona Barthel - the lanky German has had good year so far and has surprised a few of her opponents this year. In January, Barthel won her first WTA title at Hobart. Then in February, she managed to reach the quarterfinal of Paris(indoors). March was rather disappointing for her where she only managed to reach the 2nd and 3rd rounds of Indian Wells and Miami, respectively. In the recently concluded Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, Barthel fought like a gladiator before being undone by World No.1 Victoria Azrenka in the quarterfinals. Her win/loss record this year stands at 26/9.
In their only match against each other Wozniacki prevailed in two unchallenged sets. This time however, all the evidence points towards a much more competitive match. TennisEarth predicts the German to win it in a tight three setter.
