
Ranked No.4 in the world at that time, Nadal cruised through the opening rounds, not dropping a set till his fourth round class versus Sebastian Grosjean of France. In the quarter final he met fellow Spaniard David Ferrer and handed out a tennis lesson, beating him in three virtually unchallenged sets. In the semi-final, Nadal met the World No.1 - Roger Federer, Nadal showed immense composure as he overcame Federer in four close sets.
In the final, Nadal met Mariano Puerta of Argentina - the man who had defied all odds in reaching the final. His heroics however, were not enough to stop Nadal from winning his first Grand Slam title. Nadal won 6-7(6),6-3,6-1,7-5.
