Top seed James Blake and Second seed Mardy Fish were eliminated from the US Men’s Clay Court Championship as they both suffered first round defeat on Tuesday.
Bjorn Phau of Germany caused the first upset of the day as he rallied past second seed Mardy Fish 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 in the afternoon.
Phau said “At the beginning, I didn’t feel as well but I started to feel better by the third set. I tried to get into a rhythm and I think I got it.”
No 1 seed James Blake was ousted by Argentine Guillermo Canas 6-4, 6-4 in the evening session.
