Bernard Tomic of Australia locks horns with Spaniard Albert Montanes for a place in the third round of the Barcelona Open. One can expect a good, well contested match its between an upcoming youngster and a seasoned campaigner on clay.
Tomic has had a erratic year as his win/loss record stands at 13/7. He started the year on a high in the Brisbane Open where he reached the last four, losing to eventual winner Andy Murray. In the Australian Open he reached the round of 16, where he scummed to Roger Federer. He started the clay court season on a disappointing note losing in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. He will be looking to resurrect his season in the upcoming Barcelona Open. His very impressive win over Ernests Gulbis proved the fact that he can play well on clay too.
His opponent is one who is very well versed with clay. Former Top-25 player Montanes has not been in the best of form this year with a win-loss record of 3-8 but, is a great competitor on clay, with 5 ATP titles to his name. Presently ranked outside the Top-50 at 69, Montanes has great coverage and is very consistent from the baseline. His previous round victory showed that he coming back to form.
The two will be facing off for the first time and it seems like though Montanes has experience on clay, it will be the youth in Tomic that might prevail.
