Berdych and Raonic advance into quarters in Oeiras
Top-seeded Czech Tomas Berdych humbled Indian Somdev Devvarman 6-3 6-2 on Thursday to make a fine start to his 2014 Portugal Open campaign.

World No. 7 Tomas Berdych defeated top Indian Somdev Devvarman in straight sets 6-3 6-2 to begin his Portugal Open campaign on Thursday in Oeiras. The top seed broke Devvarman’s serve three times to win the match in 76 minutes. With this win, Berdych registered his 22nd tour-level win of the season.

“I took my chances very well, even though I was a bit down, especially on my serve,” said Berdych. “There's a lot of space to improve. I need to go out there very focused and play my best tennis.”

Berdych is making his first appearance in this tournament since 2005 and he is gunning for his second title of the season. On the other hand, World No. 9 Milos Raonic of Canada also made a good start to his Oeiras campaign, dispatching Uruguay’s Pablo Cuevas 6-3, 6-2 in just 68 minutes. The Canadian earned 76 per cent points on his serve and converted three of his eight break points to win the match in straight sets. Raonic is coming off three consecutive quarter-final showings at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments in Indian Wells, Miami and Monte-Carlo. He goes on to face Carlos Berlocq after the Argentine topped Lukasz Kubot 6-4, 6-3.

"It was difficult to find momentum, so overall I look back on the match and I'm happy with how everything went," said Raonic. "I have to keep getting better in every match. If I do so, the opportunity will be there [to win the tournament] and it'll be about me stepping up and taking it."

Portuguese wild card entrant Gastao Elias also advanced into the Oeiras quarter-finals for the second consecutive year after he upset fourth seed Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Elias will next take on the Romanian Victor Hanescu, who beat another Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
