After showing much promise at the 2008 Australian Open where they ended as a runner-up and a semi-finalist, a prolonged period of underperformance plummeted the rankings of Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic.
The former world number ones are now currently poised to take on one another in one of the most anticipated third round match of the Australian Open in Melbourne on Friday night. The Serb compatriots have been out of the top 10 for a long time now and have also slugged through their respective second round encounters in the ongoing tournament.
Though Jankovic advanced first in the next round, the 21st ranked right handed player took a three set 2-6, 7-6,6-2 win against Maria Joao Koehler to do so. The veteran did avoid a narrow escape at the match as she was just two points away from defeat by the Portuguese. Ivanovic too did not fare better as the former world No.1 needed to struggle against Taiwanese Yung-Jan Chan to win in three sets 7-5, 1-6, 6-4.
The two will be meeting for the second time in a Grand Slam event though Ivanovic has an overall 7-3 head to head lead over her 27-year-old rival. The Serb lass are also reported to have shared a cold relationship but apparently things seem normal at the moment as they both played together for their country Serbia in the Fed Cup in 2012.
Though Ivanovic has not been consistent with her performance, the 25-year-old is considered an offensive player who is quite notable for employing an aggressive game approach. The 13th rank was good in form at the recently concluded Hopman Cup but slipped in the final to ultimately lose to Spain.
On the contrary, Jankovic is perceived as a counterpuncher with an impressive ability to slide effectively. Hard court is considered her best surface where she can solidly use her speed to win matches. Moreover, with more consistent groundstrokes, Jankovic might able to bring the pressure on her 13th ranked opponent.
But the former world No.1 too has her own problems as well having lost to Roberta Vinci in the pre-Aussie warm up tournament earlier this month and will need to produce her best if she has to stand a considerable chance of winning against Ivanovic.
Whatever the case and whoever wins the third round, one of them will face the possibility of running into in-form Agnieszka Radwanska who is yet to drop a single set this year. And, this will be the test of their mettle which has taken a blow in recent years.
TennisEarth predicts a tight three set match between the two with Ivanovic as a winner.
