Angelique Kerber from Germany silenced the crowd when she beat two time defending champion Caroline Wozniacki in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 48 minutes. Kerber played some fascinating tennis to upset Wozniacki who was eying to make it a hat-trick of titles at home.
The first set was more about breaks as both competitors kept breaking each others serve to keep themselves in contention of winning the first set. But it was the German who broke the Dane in the ninth game and further went on to hold the tenth to wrap up the set in 46 minutes. She hit 18 winners in this set and that probably turned out to be the deciding factor.
The second set was like a pendulum, swaying from one end to the other, Wozniacki lead 4-1 in the second set to see her 3 game cushion go in vain when Kerber won the last 5 games back-to-back to wrap the second set with a good slice serve out wide. Wozniacki injured herself by twisting her ankle early in the second set but never gave in.
With this win Kerber won her second WTA title of the year and of her career as well.
