Former World No.1 Andy Roddick takes on countryman Michael Russell for a place in the second round of 2011 US Open, season's last Grand Slam event being played here at Flushing Meadows in New York, USA.
After claiming his 30th career singles title in Memphis, American Andy Roddick went through a disappointing European claycourt event losing streak that stretched to a few more surprise results at the Grand Slam level, unfortunately against the American star. Roddick then took almost a month off to recuperate from a couple of nagging injuries to prepare himself for his favourite American summer hardcourt season. With an opening round exit from Cincinnati masters, an event he won back in 2006, Roddick made a hasty yet wise decision to participate at the inaugural Winstom-Salem Open but lost his semifinal to an improved John Isner, who eventually lifted the winner's trophy.
Roddick's opponent, Michael Russell is ranked as low as No.96 in the world and has no singles titles to his resume on ATP World Tour. Russell's best this season came on home soil in Memphis and Washington where he finished a quarterfinalist and pre-quarterfinalist respectively to see a morale boosting rise in his rankings.
Both players have already contested a match which Roddick won in straight sets nine years ago in Houston.
The world changed for Roddick since the pair's last meeting and saw him achieve big milestones in his career. Today's contest will once again bring the usual best out of Roddick and the 2003 champion will hopefully clinch victory without much ado.
TennisEarth.com's Pick - Andy Roddick in straight sets.
