“I honestly thought she would win (Wimbledon) last year in her first tournament back after injuries. I've always had that confidence in Serena,” Andy Roddick said jokingly, complimenting Serena Williams for her amazing run at Wimbledon.
Roddick, who was defeated in the third round of Wimbledon, hailed Serena for her rejuvenated finish after coming back from a number of career threatening injuries, giving her the nickname “master of comebacks.”
A year ago at around this time, Williams was ranked No.169. Now, she's one of the best in the world again. “You know what, I don't know if I was surprised by it,” Roddick said of Williams' Wimbledon triumph. “She's proven herself to be a great champion. She's almost become a master of comebacks. I remember when it was like three or four years ago she was down below the top 100 in the world, and people were wondering then if that was it, and she came back and dominated. ...I was happy to see her back where she belongs in the winner's circle there.”
Roddick, who has teamed up with Serena multiple times for mixed doubles, wasn't sure if the pair would reunite for the Olympic Games in London. “I don't know, you're asking the wrong person,” Roddick said.
Roddick was also quick to commend Venus Williams, who teamed up with Serena to capture a fifth doubles Wimbledon title. Venus has had an ongoing battle with an auto-immune disorder and has had to struggle a lot to stay on the tennis court. “What she's been going through is not easy,” Roddick said. “I think the toughest part of it for her is not knowing on a day-to-day basis. If you have a sprained ankle, you have a rough estimate of time as to how long it's going to take before you're OK.”
“I don't think it's that simple with what she's dealing with. For her to have a highlight (Wimbledon doubles title) in the middle of this rough patch is probably real big for her. Whenever (Venus and Serena) decide to play, I think they're automatically the best team in the world. The thing that I do know about Venus is she's going to give herself every opportunity to succeed regardless of what's in the way.”
