In another intriguing match-up at the Mutua Madrid Masters, World No.4 Agnieska Radwanska is all set to battle qualifier Varvara Lepchenko.
Radwanska has had a good year so far with her win-loss record standing at 30-5. She started the year by reaching the semifinals of the Sydney International and then only managed to reach the quarterfinal of the only Grand Slam this year - the Australian Open. She has since, picked her game up and won her eighth WTA title at Dubai, with that she cracked the Top 5 in March and then jumped to No.4 spot in the world winning her ninth WTA title in Miami, upsetting Maria Sharapova in the final. Her pulsating three set victory over Na Li in the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix proved why she has jumped the rankings so fast. In the semifinal of it however, she was completely outplayed by World No.1 Victoria Azarenka. Radwanska has looked dominant all tournament and she is one of the favorites along with Azarenka and Sharapova to win the event.
At the other end, Varvara Lepchenko comes into this tournament as a qualifier. This is her first quarterfinal appearance of this year, and has largely been poor. She comes in as the surprise package and upset eleventh seed Francesca Schiavone in the first round.
In their two past meetings, Radwanska had beaten Lepchenko on both occasions and the odds are heavily stacked in favor of the Pole.
TennisEarth pick: Radwanska to prevail in an easy two setter.
