In a match between 2 players that hit a single hand backhand, Richard Gasquet of France takes on Nicolas Almagro of Spain for a place in the Quarter finals of the Sony Open being played in Miami, Florida. This promises to be a cracker of a match with Gasquet looking to hold on to his Top-10 ranking and Almagro trying to break into the Top-10 again.
Ranked at No.10 in the World, former No.7 Gasquet couldn’t have asked for a better start to the year. With two titles already in his bag this year, the Frenchman has been playing some really high quality tennis this year and would be hoping to keep his good form going. With one of the most dangerous backhands on tour, Gasquet has won a total of 9 career ATP Titles and would looking to add more this year.
On the other hand, former World No.9 Almagro comes into this match with a 12-5 win-loss record after some solid performances at all the tournaments he has featured in this year. But his Third Round at last week’s BNP Paribas Open must be disappointing one as it is at such tournaments that a player accumulates a big chunk of points to jump up the rankings. Ranked at No.12 in the World presently, the Spaniard would be gunning to crack the Top-10 soon.
This is the fifth time the two are facing each other with Almagro leading 3-1 in their head-to-head encounters. The last time they played was at last year with Almagro winning in straight sets.
