2013 Chennai Open: Tomas Berdych vs. Somdev Devvarman Match Preview
A lot to look forward for Indian fans in this encounter as local favorite and Indian tennis hope Somdev Devvarman takes on top-seeded and World No. 6 Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic for a place in the last eight at 2013 Chennai Open. Obviously, Berdych goes into this encounter as crushing favorite, but Somdev can muster some inspiration from a huge crowd support in Chennai to create a massive upset.

Looking forward to make a brilliant start to the season with a title win, top-seeded and World No. 6 Tomas Berdych of Czech Republic takes on local favorite Somdev Devvarman for the first time in 2013 Chennai Open on Thursday. Interestingly, both contenders have made wild card entries to this tournament.

World No.6 Tomas Berdych made his previous appearance here in Chennai, two years ago and reached the semi-finals, when he lost to Wawrinka. The 27-year-old Czech is coming off his third straight Top 10 finish and he also led his country to the Davis Cup title win over Spain last month. Berdych claimed two ATP World Tour titles in the last season in Montpellier and Stockholm, and also finished as a semi-finalist at the US Open after beating Roger Federer.

On the other hand, Indian Somdev Devvarman reached his career’s highest ranking of World No. 62 in 2011 after producing some good results on tour, but failed to maintain that form. He missed a greater part of the last season due to recurring injuries. The 27-year-old Indian outplayed a limping Jan Hajek of Czech Republic 6-3, 6-3 in his opening match.

This will be a first meeting between these two and that makes this encounter more interesting. While interacting with the press, Berdych asserted when asked about his match with the local-favorite Devvarman, "I have never played Somdev before, so a first meeting can always be tough since you don't know what to expect. Also, he will have the home advantage which only makes it even more difficult for me. I will try to do what I know best and start the season from zero.”
