Two players who have battled their way past 5 rounds at Wimbledon get ready to face off in what promises to be an epic clash! Victoria Azarenka of Belarus squares off against Serena Williams for a spot in the finals of The Championships. Azarenka is ranked at No.2 with Serena at No.6 on the WTA charts.
Winning the first four tournaments one plays, including the Australian Open is a dream start for any player and Azarenka lived it! But, in the next four tournaments, she reached the finals of two of them and lost both. Her reign at the top was cut short when her surprising fourth round exit was backed by her closest competitor Maria Sharapova winning the French Open. Her win-loss record stands at an astounding 38-4 this year as getting to close to reclaiming her No.1 ranking would be on her mind soon. After being tested a bit in the opener, Azarenka has not looked back, winning all her encounters in straight sets and sending a strong message to her fellow competitors.
On the opposite side of the court, Williams has battled past injuries and is gunning to win her fifth Wimbledon title. She had to miss out a full WTA season due to a foot injury. But as the American has done over the years, she made a fantastic comeback in the ongoing season and has a very good 27-3 win-loss record coming into this tournament. She has also claimed 2 titles so far this season as she hunts for more. Nothing has been hunky dory for Serena in this tournament, and she has shown that despite her lack of form, the will to win is what matters. Her previous round victory over Petra Kvitova in two really well contested sets showed glimpses of her top form, something Azarenka would not be hoping for.
When it comes to their head-to-head encounters, Serena has really dominated the Belorussian, their 7-1 record in favor of Serena says it all. Will Williams extend her lead or will it be Azarenka cutting it short? Time is the key!
